Dental Health and Causes of Disease
Over time, human teeth have always been subject to various diseases and injuries that cause discomfort and pain. One of the common causes is trauma, such as a blow, which can lead to a tooth fracture or even tooth loss. Other causes of dental diseases include:
- gum inflammation;
- loose teeth;
- bad breath;
- dental caries.
Dental Caries: Causes and Mechanism
Dental caries is one of the most common dental diseases, which appeared long before modern sweets. Even our ancestors had dental damage caused by destructive processes.
How does tooth decay develop?
Teeth decay develops under the influence of two factors:
- Protection mechanisms: genetically determined processes that ensure the strength of teeth.
- Mechanisms of damage: the effects of bacteria, acids and other external factors.
Protection mechanisms
The body's natural defense processes help prevent tooth damage. However, their influence is limited, since they depend on genetic characteristics. Good oral hygiene can enhance their effect.
Mechanisms of damage
Teeth decay begins with the formation of plaque. The main stages of its development:
- Bacterial plaque settles on the surface of the teeth.
- Bacteria secrete lactic acid, which destroys the enamel.
- Damaged enamel gives bacteria access to dentin, which accelerates tooth decay.
Dental plaque: what is it?
Dental plaque is 90% salivary proteins that settle on the teeth. This is a natural process that intensifies with physical activity, when more saliva is secreted. Bacteria in plaque feed on food debris, multiply, and secrete acids that destroy tooth enamel.
How to combat plaque?
- Regular brushing of teeth - at least twice a day.
- Using toothbrushes and pastes with active components, such as fluoride toothpastes, which can be purchased in Ukraine.
Quality brushing of teeth prevents the proliferation of bacteria and the destruction of enamel. Even brushing teeth once every three days can be effective if done thoroughly.
Laziness is the main enemy of teeth
The main reason for the development of caries is human laziness. Regular, quality oral hygiene that includes minimal intervention is the best prevention. Taking the time to care for your teeth will help you maintain the health and beauty of your smile for many years to come.
