Teeth whitening agents in dentistry

They are used to optimize the aesthetics of yellowed front teeth.

• For nighttime use, the agents consist of “carbamide peroxide” gels.
• For daytime use, derivatives of hydrogen peroxide are used.
• For internal whitening, for example, of a tooth that has darkened after root canal treatment, carbamide peroxide is also used.

The gels used for micro-etching consist of phosphoric acid.

Amalgam as a Dental Material

Amalgam consists of small particles of silver, tin and copper combined with mercury. Its mechanical properties and durability have made it the first choice for many years. However, its main disadvantage is the fact that it contains mercury (admittedly in a stable form). Its unaesthetic aspect is also a disadvantage. That is why its use has become very limited in modern dentistry.

Composite dental materials 

Aesthetic fillings have existed for a long time, but the recent development of composite resins (by 3M) has had a great impact in dentistry. Today, this material is the first choice in conservative restorative dentistry, thanks to significant progress made in pulp protection and adhesive techniques. The mixture introduced into the cavity hardens under the influence of a photopolymer lamp. These fillings are sometimes sensitive to cold for several weeks. The mixture is also used to permanently seal crowns and bridges.

 Glass ionomer dental materials

This material is used for temporary fillings of baby teeth. It is also used for permanent sealing of crowns and bridges as a well-tolerated.

Gold as a dental material

In dentistry, gold is found in the form of gold alloys. An ideal material due to its:

1. - harmlessness
2. - accuracy
3. - rigidity, which is necessary for important prosthetic implementations.

It is mainly used for reconstructions of posterior teeth. Gray gold is usually chosen because it is less noticeable.

Ceramics as a dental material

Due to their greater aesthetic possibilities, they are widely used, ceramic restorations have been the material of choice in fixed prosthetics (crowns and bridges). Its disadvantage is:

• that it is extremely hard
• and can sometimes break.

Steel (chromium-cobalt) as a dental material

This material is used in removable prosthetics for frames and clasps. Titanium as a dental material is used in implantology due to its anti-allergic properties. It can also be used in rare cases of metal allergy with removable prosthetics.

Bone filling materials in dentistry

Bone filling with artificial bone grafts has made significant progress and has largely replaced heterogeneous grafts(no longer used) and homogeneous grafts (still sometimes used). Bone grafts are made of microporous ceramic that is biocompatible (Bio-Oss). Resorbable membranes used for guided bone regeneration are currently the technique of choice in oral surgery.

Endodontic materials in dentistry

Certain products and medications are used for root canal treatment. Their goal is to prolong the viability of the tooth when it seems possible (calcium hydroxide). If the viability of the tooth cannot be preserved, the pulp chamber and root canals are disinfected and sealed. The disinfectants will be active (e.g. corticosteroids), but permanent sealing of the canals will be done with an inert substance (e.g. gutta-percha). MTA (mineral trioxide composite) is a very biocompatible material that has been successfully used for several years, especially in endodontics involving apical resection.

Zirconium as a dental material

Zirconium is mainly used for fixed prosthetic frameworks. It is a type of CAD ceramic used in dentistry for the last 20 years, popular due to its biocompatibility and its aesthetic properties. However, it is very expensive due to the advanced technology it requires. Unfortunately, it has given poor results in implantology and cannot be recommended in this industries.

Acrylic resin as a dental material

Used for the manufacture of artificial gums in removable dentures. Denture teeth are made of acrylic resin or ceramics.
